CHAPTER SEVEN
ADAM GLANCED DOWN the long conference table where the members of Mr. Moreiraâs treatment team had gathered to talk about timetables and who would be in charge of planning each segment of their patientâs journey back to health. He wasnât exactly sure what he thought about Natália attending this particular meeting, but Sebastian wanted her here. Sheâd spoken with their patient on more than one occasion and since they had all agreed that she would help keep him motivated, Adam couldnât very well ask to have her taken off the team. Not without answering some very difficult questions.
Questions that could put him in an awkward situation to say the very least.
As if sensing his eyes were on her, Natália picked that very moment to glance over and catch him staring. Her brows went up, then her attention shifted to the current speaker: Sebastian, who was talking about the chemo regimen he hoped to begin this week. Theyâd gotten the okay from the insurance companies and, thanks to Natália, from the patient himself. The only thing left to do was set the exact date.
âSo what does everyone think about next Wednesday for starting dose one of the methotrexate?â
The treatment regimen was the one most often used for this type of osteosarcoma.
âSounds good,â Adam said. âStandard protocol?â
âYes, unless weâre not getting the results we want. If that happens, weâll re-evaluate.â
A hand went up from farther down the table. Natália was asking for the floor.
Sebastian nodded in her direction. âYou have something to add?â
âIâm just curious as to what âstandard protocolâ means in this case.â
âIt means that there is a narrow window, and we want to follow what has worked for the largest segment of patients.â
âHeâs worried about being sick and not appearing himself to the people he loves. Especially his daughter. Since sheâs a nurse, he knows he wonât be able to hide much from her.â
Leave it to Natália to think of something other than objective facts. But it made sense. Her area of expertise wasnât as cut and dried as oncology and orthopedics were. On the rare occasions heâd ventured down into NICU, heâd witnessed her tenderly holding those babies as if she could love them back to health. And maybe she could. It didnât work that way in his specialty. Cuddling his patients wouldnât mend broken bones. It certainly wouldnât cure Mr. Moreiraâs osteosarcoma. Or could it? Hadnât Sebastian told him he had seen miraculous recoveries in patients whoâaccording to every statisticâshould be dead?
And the way Natália had coaxed their patient to give medicine a chance... Sheâd spoken from the heart and used her own experience to give the man a sense of hope. Without her, this treatment team probably wouldnât be meeting to discuss treatment at all, but rather issuing discharge papers.
His eyes caught hers again as Sebastian asked, âWhat exactly is he afraid of? Losing his hair?â
âHeâs afraid of not being seen as the man he perceives himself to be.â
âHeâs not going to be that man.
